While I slowly start feeling at home in this corner of the internet, I haven't quite figured out how it all works. What to post about, what comments are appreciated, how to interact with communities etc. (am I overthinking this? probably. welcome to my head).

Thought of the Week:
I've discovered, once again, that when Germans find each other in an English speaking context, even if they start talking about a topic like German grammar or a crime show that's the German equivalent of Doctor Who (as in everyone has seen it at some point and it's running for ~50 years), we will stick to English. Not necessarily 'cause there might be people around for the conversation, who don't understand German, but rather because it would be weird.

What I haven't quite figured out yet is, why is it weird? Switching languages mid conversation is not that odd in multilingual spaces. English for a good part seems to be the lingua franca of the internet, so maybe that's it?

Here is a fic idea I had but don't feel like writing - feel free to use it:

The Untamed/Mdzs The Martian Fusion
This was inspired by another post (forgot by who, I'll link it if I find it) about Wei Wuxian working at Granny Wen's farm and my first thought was "He does have Botany Powers. You know, like Mark Watney."

Now this could be a) Wei Wuxian being left behind on Mars and essentially going through his Burial Grounds phase with some potatoes or b) let's change it up a bit and there already was a little colony on Mary and when the research team gets the order to leave because of the storm and leave the colonists behind, Wei Wuxian just can't.

With both options the Wen Clan or Jin Guangshan could be an antagonist, trying to save resources instead of wasting them on Wei Wuxian (and the others).

Yeah, I do that too with German - like, I could answer you in German now, but it indeed feels.. weird? Impolite? Usually, there will be other people from the flist reading these posts too, who aren't German/don't understand the language, so it feels like shutting them out. On tumblr, I follow a few Germans and there has been the rare German post about something very specific, where we don't switch to English. But usually no, everyone just writes in English. XD I guess it might mostly be because in these fandom spaces, English is what most people understand. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

(Yes weirdly enough even part of Tatort fandom on tumblr does that at times. XD And I am someone who has never seen a whole Tatort I think... or no, that's a lie, I have seen one whole Tatort, because Joachim Kemmer was in it. XD)

A The Martian AU could be really interesting, either by keeping close to the original or mixing it up more.

It's so, so weird. Sometimes we don't even acknowledge each other. Someone drops a little fact that gives them away as German and if it's not important to the conversation it just gets ignored. We just go on with it, maybe save the information for later.

Good to know that "a crime show that's the German equivalent of Doctor Who" is a good enough description to figure out I mean Tatort (context if you want it).

Mixing it up or keeping close to The Martian could both work well. I just imagine Lan Wangji down on earth trying his best to get Wei Wuxian back in his stern and quiet way. Oh the pinning!

Yeah it's like, "Oh a fellow German!" and just move on. XD I have to sometimes actively remin d myself that several people here on my flist are German, because one just... forget because everyone writes in English.

Haha, of course it is, there's nothing else this long-running I think. :D And of course, it's Tatort SB that has everyone go crazy on tumblr, the few things that made it onto my dash. XD The tragedy, the gay! XD

Wondering what would be worse - having Lan Wangji be on Earth and trying to science Wei Wuxian back to him, or have him be on the spaceship that left supposedly dead WWX on Mars, then hearing "uhh oops guys, he's alive - but we don't know how to get him so he's basically dead anyway". Both excellent opportunities for tragic drama and happy reunions! Upping the pining factor if they haven't yet confessed. XD

I've only learned about the new developments in Tatort yesterday/today but I'm already invested.

Both options for Lan Wangji are mean, mean, mean. Just imagine the moment he learns that Wei Wuxian is still alive. Oh, that ship is turning around no matter what orders they get. He would in gay ~~avenging~~ rescuing angel mode and nothing could stop him.
Oh the pining is always wonderful with those two.

While I have a few ideas for other icons, I'm not quite sure how to use them yet, sooo that'll have to wait.

He would be so, so scary! All silent and focused.

Oh the heartbreak, when he thinks Wei Wuxian is dead (whether he confessed yet or not) and then the sudden hope, when he isn't! The struggle if he should obey the orders to turn back to earth anyway or follow his heat and go save the love of his life. And if Jiang Cheng is also on board the space ship ... those two sharing a common goal, would be devastating for anyone getting in their way.

Ohhh you could parallel it with canon as some kind of 13 year speedrun! XD It’s more tragic if they haven’t confessed, or WWX even hasn’t yet realised his full feelings – he’d have a lot of time to think about it, how he would love to have Lan Zhan there, because he’s his favourite person, and then slowly realise, “Ah shit I’m in love with him, huh? But I’m stuck on Mars so I’ll never be able to tell him.”

And LWJ would be so tragic, he’s been in love with WWX for years and now he’s dead and LWJ wasn’t even able to tell him! Until they get the message that, “Uhm sorry, but… looks like WWX isn’t dead after all. Though you have no way of getting him now…” And LWJ would be feral! But there’s the responsibility for their ship too, but if there’s a possibility to rescue WWX…

And it could parallel how LWJ and JC worked together through Sunshot searching for WWX – they don’t really like each other, but they can be civil, have been civil – and now they’ve got a common goal that suddenly makes them work quite well together.

WWX starting to keep diary with the video camera and about his loneliness and missing LWJ. Slowly realising he is in love on camera. Oh, the horror the moment he realises that he can go back and his love sick ramblings might not stay a secret.

But oh yes, keeping the diary and always going, “Oh I wish Lan Zhan could see this, he’d get such a kick out of it, “ or “Lan Zhan wouldn’t have let the HUB blow up, I’m sure, he’s much more diligent, but ah well”, or “I really miss Lan Zhan’s tiny smiles, they’re so cute. I’d never be able to feel sad if I could see that smile every day…”

It doesn't have to be Mars specifically, now does it? It could be a Star Trek Fusion, WWX is lost on some remote planet with some weird anomaly. This would be the perfect opportunity for more Vulcan LWJ. I'm a sucker for Vulcan LWJ.

Yeah sure, but it would still be scifi that I don’t know how to write. XD (Not very familiar with Star Trek, like, I've watched the new movies with Chris Pine...? ^_^;) LWJ as a Vulcan seems very logical, indeed. XD

I've actually read a The Martian fusion! It followed the plot of the book/movie really closely and at times felt a little bit like "The Martian, but with character names swapped out" which is not my favorite flavor of fusion, but it was still fun: "And I Think It's Gonna Be a Long, Long Time" by sketchyscribbles

I also don't like it if a Fusion follows the inspiration too closely, so yeah. But there are some very good ones out there.

Fandom vocabulary is all in English. I speak German most of the time with carmenta, but even then we have pretty healthy denglishing going on because...well, our fannish vocabulary is all English.

Plus, English is the porn language.

re:vocabulary: That's something I've experienced a few times now. If I learn about a topic in one language transferring that knowledge and using it in another language is very difficult. That is true for fandom stuff and many other topics.

I had a peek at the last MDZS novel in German, which includes all the explicit smut scenes, and OMG, it's so horribly awkward in German! (*/ω＼*) It sounds so wrong even though objectively, it isn't even really badly translated - just, explicit smut in German. *shudders*

But rest assured, I think everyone thinks of English as the porn language. This has, of course, partially to do with smut in your native tongue just being awkward, but even people who are very multilingual think that English is the porn language.

Well, yaoi usually has fewer discriptions and you can ignore the speech bubbles.
But when you rely on written descriptions, German erotic writing ... it's just not it.

And the sound effects aren't as cringe, yes.

Plus, yaoi manga doesn't have descriptions of....anatomy. Usually. At least not as much.

Fun Fact: due to Classical Archaeology I'm so used to the word phallus in German that I started using it in non-archaeology situations. It's not helpful.

In an "anything goes" sort of way, since very few things are actually illegal here (as in, if it's legal to do between consenting adults, it's also legal to depict, while some things in other countries are legal between consenting adults but are banned from being depicted). Plus, Germany has one of the largest porn industries globally.

I didn't know that. But it makes sense. Well, good for the economy I guess?

XD That’s like that contest for the worst sex scenes in a published book, I always love to go through those because it’s so uplifting for me as a writer. I feel so insecure about writing more explicit scenes, but I’m definitely not that bad! XD

I recently read a cozy crime in German and....so many dialogue tags. Why are people using so many dialogue tags? It was weird, it pulled me completely out of it. I'm not sure if it was just this book or if it's a German problem.

I'm not sure Glied is....better, actually. My friend said that about Schwanz in relation to fanfic (for Tatort fandom, how we got there I'm still not sure), so in a more colloquial setting but. I'm not sure which is better. Both are bad, imo. It's just so...awkward.

But yeah, also for me, if anyone would look at my shelves, they'd probably think I'm some kind of expat rather than a native German speaker. It's very odd.

Glied reminds me of Dr. Sommer. XD I also side-eye things like member pretty hard in fic, idk know. Maybe because it is a bit high brow? Liebesessenz........................omg. Nooooooooo. omg.
