(no subject)

I have not yet fallen into a ditch. Which might be surprising to some people, who know me.

Short life update:

The past two weeks I was first very busy finishing an assignment for uni, which of course broke on the night I tried to send it in. I had to fix it and I didn't dare check in with my instructor since handing it in. Then I worked a full week, which is exhausting physically and mentally. The physical exhaustion is just 9 hours of physical labour. I'm saying just because that is what I signed up for with this job, I knew what I was getting into and I'm fine with it. The mental part is a mix of constantly learning new things, bad organisation in the company and that one coworker I don't get along with at all. This I'm not fine with.

In theory I have an idea how to handle this coworker, keeping my distance for example and just doing my job as my boss tells me too. But it's all not that simple and not that easy to actually do. Oh the joy of living with your coworkers for most of the week. From dawn till dusk around the same group of people and one of them keeps giving me unclear instructions and then gets pissed off, when I ask for clarification.

Fandom Update:

I'm still reading Leeward by Katie Daysh and it's still really fucking good. I'm almost through with it and I love every bit of it. There is just one little issue - not with the book itself - I'll have to face in the near future. My mum wants to read it too and I'm not sure if I'm comfortable with that. The romance is taking it's sweet time and I love that, but this way I can't tell which way it might go and if it might get explicit. Do I really want to share that with my mum? On the other hand it would be fun to see how fast she figures the plot out.

In other news I found a Much Ado About Nothing adaptation I didn't know yet. It's Much Ado by Bernard Taylor a musical version, available as a studio recording. The music is beautiful and I like Beatrice but I'll have to listen to it a few more times to get a real opinion.

I'm also taking part in the Unsent Letters Exchange 2025! There are many requests that fit my offers so I'm excited about what I'll get assigned tomorrow. Sadly one prompt I really hoped for didn't appear in any requests: a preteen girl in a zombi apocalypse writing to no one specifically. Have a title - Taylor's Rules to Surviving Hell - and rough plot ready to go, so I might write it some other time.

It's a work week for me, which means 5 consecutive 12 hour days with 8-9 hours of physical labour. That of course doesn't leave a lot of time for fun/online activities.

BUT I got convinced by friends to start a little fandom exchange for Emergency! and preparing that takes up most of my free time. I called it Silly Little Emergency Exchange Project or SLEEP for short. I'll make a community for it some time this week and finish up all the prep. It's a lot. It's fun and I'm not complaining but it's a lot.

The good thing is I've already done a lot, despite my limited time each evening. I'll hopefully finish it this Saturday.

Cloudy with a Chance of Fanfiction

I really want to finish the fics I write. I have so many ideas, there are always new ones, I take notes and write some scenes and plot but they never get finished. I took part in a fic exchange that really helped me with it, at least for this one fic. Now I've got my hopes up I might find a way to manage that with my longer projects too. But I really don't know how to work on a long term project consistently. Maybe I should start slowly? And start with shorter fic ideas I have laying around?

Or maybe I'm overthinking it (as usual) and should just do the thing. but how

It's difficult though, or at least I find it difficult, to sit there on my own trying to figure everything out with zero feedback or anyone to discuss my ideas with. I have tried discussing my ideas with friends in the fandoms I try to write for. They are mostly excited about the chance of fanfiction but not exactly helpful in figuring  out plot points, beta reading etc.

The big exception are my Emergency! friends, they are enabling gremlins and they know it. The thing is, E! is one of the less inspiring fandoms for me, and I'd love to know people from other fandoms like I do among the E! folks.

Life update

I'm procrastinating like there is a prize to win. There is no prize to win of course, there never is and I really should know that by now. Alas, I have to hold a presentation in a day and I'm not even close to prepared. The only way to solve this, is to work on the damn presentation but all I want to do is read fiction and not academic papers.

Speaking of reading: I'm finally reading Leeward!
Leeward by Katie Daysh is a new-ish age of sail book, the first part of a trilogy, and it includes a gay romance.

My first impression after the first chapter was that the author truly understands in medias res. Katie Daysh throws you into the middle of the Battle of the Nile together with the main character, Captain Hiram Nightingale. She also shows immediately that Captain Nightingale is an emotional wreck. Chapter two only confirmed that impression for me and with every passing chapter the picture becomes clearer as to how and why this man is suffering. His life is a bit of a mess to say the least.

With every new ship in this books that has a name borrowed from Greco-Roman mythology or history and that's relevant for the plot somehow, I'm getting more and more suspicious. At this point it can't be an accident.

The Scylla is hunting the Ulysses.
There is a Spanish ship by the name of Fénix, which means Pheonix.
And there is a ship called the Actium, which hasn't done anything important yet, but I won't be surprised if it reappears at an important turning point.

I really like the writing style and the language, it's probably one of the best written books I've read recently. Does that say more about my current reading habit or the publishing industry? Who knows?

Anyway, that's it with my procrastinating for now.

Much Ado: Bi Ben Bea

After sharing some of my thoughts about Much Ado About Nothing and getting prompted to share more thoughts about it I've got even more.

Long story short: I think Beatrice is an heiress cause she doesn't worry about her (financial) future, her family can't tell her what to do and she can step into a lot, but not all, male coded spaces. And then I just threw in there that I think Benedict is a disaster bi without explaining it any further.

Why do I think that Benedict is a disaster bi?

Part of it is probably whishful thinking. There is also the phenomenon that homosocial spaces easily transform into homoerotic spaces. Benedict comes directly from the army, arguably one of the (historically) most homosocial spaces there is. Then there is the fact that he makes it pretty clear that he'd rather spend the rest of his days with his fellow bachelors. But, as is implied, he keeps losing those fellow bachelors probably to marriage.

Then there is this thing that Shakespeare keeps doing in many of his plays, where he has people wooed by proxy. In the case of Much Ado we have the following:
  • Don Pedro woos Hero for Claudio and strikes the deal with her father
  • The women (Hero and Ursula) woo Beatrice for Benedict
  • The men (Claudio, Leonato, Don Pedro) woo Benedict for Beatrice
Granted, Claudio asks Don Pedro for his help and Beatrice and Benedict don't want any help cause in there eyes there is no problem. A fourth one could be added:
  • Leonato convinces Claudio to marry his "brother's daughter" (who no one thinks could be Beatrice, therefore confirming my point that Antonio is not Beatrice's father) after Hero's "death"

So in summary the  A Plot: Hero and Claudio, the fairy tale love story, including the dead princess coming back from the dead, is helped along by the very traditional means of 1. two powerful men (Prince Don Pedro and Governor Leonato) arranging a match in the name of their shared friendship and 2. two powerful men arranging a match to make peace.

The B Plot: Beatrice and Benedict, the contrast piece to the fairy tale, with characters who can't even rhyme if their (love) lives dependent on it 1, is helped along by the members of their homosocial spaces. This is not the usual way for how those things go, I don't think that needs much of an argument. I also think that both of them not getting their shit together on their own, explains the disaster part quite nicely. No one arranges anything here directly, both have to be tricked.

Beatrice as I've argued before is in a position where she has no pressure and no one can pressure her to marry. And Benedict is in a similar one 2. He appears to be a self made man through his military career, has no pressure to produce an heir, which probably means that he has no title, land or money to pass down. This is on one hand a form of freedom, not being bound to any duties towards a family or wife, but it comes with certain limitations.

Beatrice can't fight a duel, cause her potential opponent would laugh at her, not accept the duel and any attack would be a crime then.

Benedict can't live an independent life. But haven't I just said he has freedom by being a self made man? Yeah, well. He has made himself a name, he has a position as a military officer, but he seems to have no land or fortune (Claudio mocks him for not having a house) or a title. For money and influence he has to depend on others. At the moment that's Don Pedro and Claudio, who have titles and money. But Beatrice says that "he wears his faith but as the fashion of his hat, it ever changes with the next block." which means that Benedict sticks with whoever is useful to him at the moment.

Maybe that's another reason why he is so against having a wife - he can't exchange a wife depending on what he needs at the moment and to support a wife, when she needs the support and can't support him, he would be even more dependent on others.

In the very first scene of the play, around the hat metaphor, Beatrice asks first "Who is his companion now? He hath every month a new sworn brother." and a few lines down "But, I pray you, who is his companion? Is there no young squarer now that will make a voyage with him to the devil?" She asks, who is Benedict's friend right now, because that keeps changing and the messenger answers accordingly:

"He is most in the company of the right noble Claudio."

Just Claudio. Not Claudio and Don Pedro. Claudio is the newest addition to Benedict's ever changing collection of best friends. Don Pedro wouldn't be missed by accident, he is a prince and not just any prince. He was their leader, perhaps their general in the conflict against Don John, his brother. And between the three of them there is clearly a close friend ship, the way they joke and tease, but also a clear hierarchy going on. Don Pedro addresses both Claudio and Benedict as "thou". Claudio uses "my lord" and "you" for Don Pedro but "thou" for Benedict. And Benedict? Benedict addresses them both as "you" and "my lord".

Benedict is clearly at the bottom of the food chain here. But he's also pretty close with both of them. They all get into each other's business all the time.

You know when Benedict uses "thou"? In jest when he's mocking Claudio, when he's talking to Margaret, for Beatrice after his confession to her and at the very end after he kissed Beatrice as a symbolic wedding towards Don Pedro. Don Pedro asks him "How dost thou, Benedick, the married man?" and Benedict answers him from that point onward using "thou". Another point that shows that Beatrice should be an heiress, cause marrying her elevates her husbands station. This also shows that Benedict's station must have been pretty low.

So what the hell was he doing with Don Pedro, Prince of Arragon? How were they friends? Cause even if they are not using "thou" both ways, they are still close. And just marrying a rich woman shouldn't elevate Benedict so far that he is on the same level as The Prince of Arragon. But a close relationship + a fortune worthy of a noble man could do that, maybe? It's also kind of implied that while Benedict is switching friends Don Pedro is not on that list. That a friendship to the Prince of Arragon is hard to replace for someone of Benedict's station is self evident. But what does Don Pedro get out of keeping this guy around, who has neither influence, nor money, nor land?

I know my argument here is weak, a bit overly complicated and born out of wishful thinking, but at the end of the day it just feels right. Benedict and Don Pedro had a thing before Beatrice came along.

And just for the record: Don Pedro is just as much of a disaster in my books. A normal person doesn't go from proposing to someone (II,1 line 702) to setting them up with your bestie in under 5 minutes (II,1 line 724).

1 Just think about it for a moment. Two Shakespeare characters that can't rhyme. And not just any two, one of the most famous couples of his plays from one of the most popular comedies. And they are constantly contrasted with a couple that barely can speak in prose about each other let alone to each other. What do those two couples have in common?

2 There is a point to be made that, while Benedict is a capable military officer, he is also dependent on others. He is friends with a Prince and a Count. He is Signior Mountanto, montanto is a fencing term for an upward thrust. The first thing Beatrice does is calling him an upstart/jump-up/wannabe.

Snowflake challenge No. 5(?)

Challenge #8 Write a manifesto, promo or primer
Oh, boy! How am I supposed to choose? And how do I write those? I'm already excited to try something new. After looking up some ship manifestos I've realized that I've read exactly two of those before, both appeared out of nowhere shortly after I asked myself "why does anyone ship that?". Both ships are now a permanent part of my TBR/open tabs collection, so those manifestos were very convincing and had a point. (It's Harry/Draco and Sokka/Zuko if anyone is wondering.)

This is the opportunity to ramble about my favourites and now I can't make a decision. Love it. I'll try to go with something that is 1. not a widely spread ship and 2. makes me slightly lose my mind every time I have the chance to talk about it.

Meet Amanda Grayson and Sarek. If you are in the Star Trek fandom you might recognise Spock's parents.

Who are Amanda and Sarek?
Sarek is the Vulcan Ambassador to Earth, so an important and powerful political figure. He's also constantly struggling with his emotions, cause he does love his wife and children, but he tries really hard not to show it, which is a problem when the family is half Human. It makes him look like an ass sometimes but he's actually a softy.

Amanda is, well, that depends. There isn't that much about her in the canon, so it changes from fic to fic. It also depends a lot on which show/movies the fic is based on. In general she is a head strong, capable woman, good at whatever job she has and often willing to follow through with the interesting rather than the obvious or sensible choice.

What canon should you consume?
Well, that's a bit hard to summarise. There are bits everywhere but nothing that really focuses on either of them. The most you will probably get from the show Discovery, but that's not necessary. I think what's more important for this ship is to understand Vulcan culture, so TOS, AOS and DIS will all serve you well, or just read up on Memory Alpha a bit. Or if you are a K/S shipper you should be good. (Did I just list K/S fics in the canon section? yes. yes I did.)

Typical Tropes and such
It's often a side pairing in K/S fic and usually very heavy on Vulcan Culture and world building, including cultural misunderstandings. That also includes often Pon Farr related problems and misunderstandings, but they usually get sorted out.
Then there is of course the fact that Sarek is emotionally constipated. And Amanda is usually the exact opposite. Which makes for an interesting dynamic.

What do I love about this ship?
Long story short: It feels like Horatio Hornblower/William Bush to me.

Long story for everyone, who doesn't get lost in age of sail stuff from time to time: An emotionally constipated idiot - Sarek - , who is actually pretty smart, struggles with existing. He thinks he has to solve all the problems in the universe on his own since he has an important job. But no one really notices, how much he struggles, 'cause he's good at improvising and making plans with what he has at hand.
This idiot meets someone - Amanda- , who is openly emotional, but not necessarily emotionally available though and probably cursing. She is also very competent, but not the same kind of books smart and struggles with the question "where do I belong?".

The moment they get together, they become a power couple, more powerful together than ever on their own. They grow because while getting to know each other, they get to know themselves too. Sarek learns to face his emotions (a bit), Amanda learns to trust her emotions. Sarek becomes the answer of Amanda's "where do I belong?" and Sarek has  something other to focus on besides his work, which opens him to new possibilities.

And there is a lot of family dynamics and exploration of alien cultures, which I love a lot.

That being said, especially when the fic sticks to the canon a lot it's not a lovey dovey happily ever after. I could never properly put it into words, but luckily [archiveofourown.org profile] TomFooleryPrime did on a post about their canon relationship.

Snowflake Challenge No.4

Challenge #7 Wishlist

Three or more things I wish for. This is a tough one - that's what I thought at first and now look at this list. Oh, well.

Let's start with the sensible ones:

1. Good Crossover Recs - I love a good crossover fic as long as I'm into one of the fandoms and it's well written, so if you have any recs for me that would make me so happy!

2. Good Podfics Recs - I'm also a fan of podfics, especially longer ones.

3.  Do you know a fic that explores a relationship? Please tell me, I love that so much. Characters that already know each other, but get to know each other and themselves even better and grow together through hardship? That's my jam and since that's really hard to tag it is really hard to find. In other words I'm always hungry for more.

These are more on the impossible side of things, I'm afraid, but one never knows:

1. I'd love for Like I Like my Coffee by [archiveofourown.org profile] binz and [archiveofourown.org profile] shiplizard to continue. Even unfinished it's one of my favourite fics ever. I first read it ~2018 when I was brand new to the Hornblower fandom and loved it so much. I still do. It's one of the best Modern Day AU's I've ever read. I asked the authors years ago if they have abandoned the fic, but the answer was a firm "no, we are just very stressed irl" which is completely understandable. I'm still worried tho.

2. A podfic/audio drama version of Eye of the Tiger by [archiveofourown.org profile] dolphin_ring , which I'm calling The Reality TV AU in my head, would be great. It doesn't have to be the whole series, one of the parts would be plenty and already a ton of work. I'd even do some of the editing/recording. It's an absolutely brilliant chat/texting fic, which would make it impossible to record as a single person. Andy goes to Survivor and is her usual charming self. Everyone else tries to help.

3. I'd like to find a good beta reader, who gives constructive criticism and advice, especially for the two Harry Potter fics that won't leave me alone, but I also won't get written, without being able to discuss them with someone, who can help me figure that shit out. Any help in finding a beta reader would be greatly appreciated.

Snowflake Challenge No.3

I'm back to doing those two at a time

Challenge #6 favourite piece of original canon
Since I'm a multifandom whore fanatic this is really difficult, I scrolled through the comments on the post for some inspiration and people brought up very powerful scenes and characters etc. The Death's speech about believe at the end of The Hogfather, scenes from Star Trek and others brought back some very powerful memories.
Two things come to my mind:

1. The scene in DS9 when Dr. Bashir meets Garak for the first time. It is less about the scene itself and more about how it came to be and what this first meeting in canon will lead to. From Andrew Robinson apparently deciding on the fly to play Garak as absolutely horny for the dear Doctor and Alexander Siddig picking it up and playing along to A Stitch in Time, which if you don't know reads like an overly complicated love letter from Garak to Dr. Bashir.

2. Beatrice from Much Ado about Nothing. I could end it right there, cause she's awesome. But there is a little detail that stuck out to me: Beatrice is probably an heiress.

It's not in the text I know, but bare with me. Beatrice is Leonato's niece. Leonato's brother Antonio barely interacts with Beatrice it's never made clear that they are father and daughter, if anyone acts parental towards Beatrice it's Leonato. She's listed as his niece not someone's daughter in the dramatis personae, everything points to her being a ward of her uncle - none of this would make sense if she's Antonio's daughter. So let's assume she's not, that would make her the daughter of a sibling of Innogen, Leonato's wife and a ghost character, who is only mentioned in the dramatis personae in early edition, but doesn't get a single line of dialogue. Innogen and Beatrice might be the only two people remaining from this family, which would make Beatrice a potential heiress.

In addition Beatrice has no real pressure - yeah, people assume she will marry one day, cause everyone does, and they tease her about it, but no one tells her that she needs a man to secure her future, which realistically would be the case unless she makes money or has inherited money.

So I think Beatrice is an heiress and I love her to bits.

Edit: Hit enter too early and it posted only half the post. I'm trying to fix it.

Snowflake Challenge No.2

Challenge #4 Goals

I want to be more active in fandom spaces in ways that make me happy. I also want to write more.

Those are two big goals I've been carrying around with me since forever. Seriously, I think there was never a time when I was really happy about how I approached those two aspects of my life, even though they've been with me for a long time now. And if anyone tries to tell me "but you joined your first online forum at 15", hush. That's not what I'm talking about.

Writing starts with the attempt to put stories into words. My first story was written down by my mum, I was sitting on the washing machine while we waited for the laundry in the summer before I started school, and I dictated it to her.

Fandom activities starts with talking with your friends about it. Does it matter if you talk about theories for the next part in a series with your friends in school or in a forum or on discord or on dw? Is it really that different to make up scenarios for your beloved characters in your head or to write them down and share them on ao3?

Of course there are differences, but in spirit they are the same thing to me. The biggest difference however are the people. One might be lucky enough to find friends irl that share an interest in some of the same fandoms, but often it doesn't quite match in its entirety. I love my friend H., who likes many shows and books I like, but her taste in fanfiction is ... somewhere between confusing and concerning to me. The internet has so many other ways to find people and interact with people, who have similar interests, it's greats. The problem with both options - irl or online - is that one has to be open with the people around them, has to approach them and risk all the possible downsides of it. The same goes for writing.

To do this successfully I have to allow people to get to know me and that's a struggle. The Ordeal of Being Known, I suppose. (a phrase I learned from a Drarry fic out of all places)

Challenge #5 improvements thanks to fandom

As I mentioned two days ago I was dragged onto the E! discord server. It has been my only regular fandom activity in a while now and I love it there. The people on there got me to write and post a fic on ao3, which considering my history of never finishing anything, is a huge success. They also helped be to learn that new people aren't scary. It sounds weird to my own ears, but I have no other words for it. Some of the people on there also asked me to beta read fics for them and that's a lot of fun.

I think in general I can say the E! server helped me explore what I actually like doing when it comes to fandom activities, instead of doing the things I think I should do, cause I see other people doing them.

Snowflake Challenge 2025

I can't be arsed to do this properly but I really need something nice that I'm doing for myself instead for uni or work or my family or hiding behind doing things for my friends.

Challenge #1: Update fandom information

What are the current fandoms I'm partaking in? There is some Emergency!, you know the 1972 TV show, cause [personal profile] guardy dragged me me down that rabbit hole and I even wrote a fic for it! They also convinced me to get a spinning wheel.

I'm also too deep in Bashir/Garak fanfiction for my own good.

Challenge #2: my fannish origin

I think I answered that before, but it lays somewhere between The Persuaders! with Roger Moore and Tony Curtis. Watching that while still in elementary school and thinking damn, they act like a silly couple opened my eyes to a new world. From that point on I started seeing it in Star Trek and the books I was reading and god knows where else.

But my first step into anything fandom related was when a friend of mine in 8th or 9th grade told me about fanfiction and when I first looked it up I walked straight into smut. Fanfiction.net, you know? You never know what's inside with that one.

See you later, hopefully!

Short Update

Hey! So I haven't been online for a bit, cause life is stressful right now. I owe several people some answers. The only thing I managed is to post on [community profile] writethisfanfic .
Speaking of which: writethisfanfic is a lovely community for writing motivation specifically for fanfiction. There are daily check in posts, so it's not much of a hassle but keeps reminding me to work on my WIP (could use a few more active members tho).

Another thing I'm excited about it Letters from Watson. The Sherlock Holmes version of Daily Dracula. It's starting properly in the new year, but the Discord server is a joy already and much more accessible between university and work than anything else right now.

(no subject)

While I slowly start feeling at home in this corner of the internet, I haven't quite figured out how it all works. What to post about, what comments are appreciated, how to interact with communities etc. (am I overthinking this? probably. welcome to my head).

Thought of the Week:
I've discovered, once again, that when Germans find each other in an English speaking context, even if they start talking about a topic like German grammar or a crime show that's the German equivalent of Doctor Who (as in everyone has seen it at some point and it's running for ~50 years), we will stick to English. Not necessarily 'cause there might be people around for the conversation, who don't understand German, but rather because it would be weird.

What I haven't quite figured out yet is, why is it weird? Switching languages mid conversation is not that odd in multilingual spaces. English for a good part seems to be the lingua franca of the internet, so maybe that's it?

Here is a fic idea I had but don't feel like writing - feel free to use it:

The Untamed/Mdzs The Martian Fusion
This was inspired by another post (forgot by who, I'll link it if I find it) about Wei Wuxian working at Granny Wen's farm and my first thought was "He does have Botany Powers. You know, like Mark Watney."

Now this could be a) Wei Wuxian being left behind on Mars and essentially going through his Burial Grounds phase with some potatoes or b) let's change it up a bit and there already was a little colony on Mary and when the research team gets the order to leave because of the storm and leave the colonists behind, Wei Wuxian just can't.

With both options the Wen Clan or Jin Guangshan could be an antagonist, trying to save resources instead of wasting them on Wei Wuxian (and the others).

It's time for some general life updates.

I signed up for [community profile] fandomtrees , here is my post ! It's a great idea and I hope it can brighten up my December this year.

I also tried to watch the Russian Sherlock Holmes series from 2013 a few days ago, but I couldn't find it. Admittedly, I didn't look very hard, but I heard some good things about it and wanted to check it out. So, if anyone knows where to find it, could you tell me?

And then, there is my current writing dilemma. I'm still working (slowly but surely) on the Harry Potter time travel fic. Things are moving along in a very chaotic way, but they are moving. I also was inspired for something entirely else. A while ago I had this idea for a Sherlock Holmes/Elementary fic: Joan Watson accidentally ends up in Victorian London, where she meets acd's Sherlock Holmes. I wrote it down for later, so I wouldn't think about it too much. But it seems I can't help it. It's incredibly distracting.

Update: Roman Sex Stuff

The English Students Participated?!?! I'm in awe. Maybe they were just more comfortable with the text based sources, who knows. But they will get more next week, since I didn't finish in time today, and I will make them analyse some things. My Professor and a friend really liked the presentation so far and I'm really proud of it.

WIP Intro: HP Time Travel

A while a go I was visiting a friend and we were talking about funny fanfictions from various fandoms. She showed me a short, crack-ish Harry Potter fic, where Harry had travelled back in time and had to teach Divination (cause he knew things that hadn't happened yet, and therefore obviously was a Seer). We started discussing what would have to change for this to be at least a little more serious. A few hours later we had a rough plot.
I love the ideas we came up with, worked some more on it and now I'm writing it - for her and to be able to blame her, if nothing else.

Now, what is this all about?
Due to an work accident Harry gets transported back in time. He ends up in the summer of 1942, where he has to solve two immediate problems: finding a way back and surviving until then. Not only does he need a roof over his head, food, clothes and other necessities, there is also the second world war going on. But luck will have it that there is an open teaching position at Hogwarts, where he will have a steady income, all the necessities taken care off and access to an excellent library to do research and find out what happened to him.
Only when he starts preparing for his new job does he realise, Tom Riddle is still a student and this is the year where he opens the chamber of secrets.

As far as I can tell right now, it will be a Gen fic with an M rating cause Tom and his friends are, well. They are, who they are. And I might have lost control over him, after asking some friends for bad things he could do. They had very good ideas. (btw. if you have some mean ideas I'd be happy to adopt them).

(no subject)

Two random thoughts of today:

1. When I was 12 or 13 years old, watching Stargate like I was paid to do so, I couldn't tell whether I wanted to be Samantha Cater, or wanted to be with her. Somehow it took me a few more years to figure out what that meant.

2. Anne Hathaway - the one from near Stratford-upon-Avon, not the American actress (unless, you know, she is an immortal and they are one and the same person) - was married to the dude, who is best known for sex jokes and killing his whole cast of characters. Can you imagine family dinners with this man? Christmas with the parents? This woman either shared her husband's humour or had (has?) some really strong nerves.
Also, how did Anne tell her parents? His earliest play was Henry VI ~1589, they married in 1582. So she married an aspiring play write with nothing to show for. Cause, what? Cause he was funny?

Also, since [personal profile] sanguinity asked, here comes the fuck/marry/kill chart

Interview Questions

[personal profile] sanguinity was kind enough to come up with some Interview questions - thank you so much!
I'll try to do the same for 5 people who ask for it

1) What are some excellent names for cats?

Phoenix - cause my favourite cat is called Phoenix, he is almost blind but brings home whole ducks and big rodents - and any noble title like Prince, Duchess, etc.

2) What Age of Sail vibes would you enjoy seeing in Sci Fi?

I'm assuming that might be about a recent tumblr post, maybe?

Here comes the short version (I'd be happy to elaborate if anyone is interested).

In Age of Sail media we have the hierarchy, the Articles, possible malnutrition, the danger of open sea (or open space) etc. in connection with the rule bending, the creative solutions, adventures, love affairs, gambling, friendships, etc. Those things to do exist in Sci Fi, but not in the same way. In Age of Sail the first, "bad" category leads to a certain formality, seriousness and angst that influence the characters and plot. But where those things, as a larger concept, in Sci Fi often become a problem to solve, in Age of Sail they are accepted parts of the setting. An annoying one or even harmful but most of the time no one really stands a chance the change it.

Instead of trying to win the war as a whole, I want individual problems or battles for individual characters, the war is just the back drop for it. Instead of overthrowing a corrupt system and unjust rulers, I want characters who have to live with that as part of their reality and handle it. I want the stiff formality, the weirdly emotional scenes of standing watch together and calling each other "Sir", pretending they are not besties. I want the devoted, questionable loyalty to a captain and a ship, to king and country on all sides. No one has the moral high ground here, you sail for England, or France, or to make money. But in Space.

The Sci Fi media that I know of that comes closest to this, it Warhammer 40k. And Warhammer 40k doesn't really have the other side, the nice, fun parts and I miss it deeply.

3) What is a favorite fic trope and why?

Enemies to lovers. I really like how the characters start out, thinking they know each other, but then they are forced to take a second look at the other person and adjust their view. It takes a lot of work to learn about each other and themselves like this. But they do so and turn out happier at the end.
I end up in a lot of fandoms where that is not a given or easily achieved in fics, which is a little sad. But there are a lot of creative people out there, who make it work.

Arranged Marriages and Fake Dating share a close second place for similar reasons.

4) Please share with us three favorite women in suits! (fictional or real life)

5) Fuck/marry/kill: Horatio, Archie, William

This is the hardest fuck/marry/kill ever, I made a chart to figure this out:
Fuck William, marry Horatio, kill Archie.
